If you are asking if it will cost you a lot, the answer is no but it is also not cheap. However, as stated above, you will be ensured more that it is safe. Since it also for your personal use, you can buy the ones that are less in size and would be easier to clean or dispose.
Frankly, there are no substitutes to cartridge water filters. All water filters are in need of these cartridges to be sure that they are cleaned and safe.
When buying your cartridge, make sure that the size will depend on how much you will use it. It is better to take this into consideration than always replacing one.
